Akalabeth : World of Doom
Synopsis
With its minimalist graphics, the game by Richard Garriott (the author of the future “Ultima”) is the ancestor of computer role-playing games.
Laying down some basics of the style in 1980, “Akalabeth” first suggests creating your character (the characteristics are drawn randomly, while you must opt for a warrior or a mage, with no further choice), then giving them equipment (with a choice again very limited). Movement in the world is done on a map seen from above, made up of mountains (which block the path), towns (to buy equipment), castles (to obtain quests) and dungeons. The latter are explored in imitation 3D, a bit like the future “Dungeon Master” and other “Eye of the Beholder” with their “box by box” movements.
The main danger you face in "map" mode is famine (be careful to have provisions in advance), while monsters (giant rat, skeleton, orc, thief) populate the dungeons.
As it is 1980, the interface is necessarily limited and the graphics are reduced to the strict minimum (white lines on a black background, which means that you can see a chest through a monster).
Akalabeth is considered the first of the “Ultima”, the famous Lord British already making his appearance here.
