Synopsis

The Annals of Rome begins in 273 BC and casts you as a Roman senator, with the ultimate goal of colonizing as many parts of the known world as possible and retaining that power against the Carthaginians, Vandals, Parthians, Persians, and all other world forces. You have a powerful army and can direct your generals as to which countries they attempt to invade.

The game is turn-based, and these turns take place in phases, starting with deciding the population's economic circumstances and tax revenues - keeping taxes low is recommended unless things become desperate. The game then informs you of the statuses of your generals and gives you the opportunity to redistribute them to other parts of your kingdom.

Officers can rebel and cause civil war – fortunately this can usually be avoided. More serious are attempts to take land from other civilizations, which take place in order and include conflicts between other groups. These, like all game elements, are historically accurately modeled and, therefore, variable over time.
