How can you do better than the paper and pencil version of the naval battle? A computer opponent, the impossibility of cheating. Elite goes even further by offering tetris-style boat shapes, allowing them to be placed in the four corners of the game board. A 'Salvo Fire' mode where each player fires a series of salvos (each of your six ships can take four shots before sinking), allows you to develop a bit of strategy by first shooting sparsely to find a boat, before tightening the fire the next round. There are also animated sequences, a two-player mode and multiplayer in which the winner accumulates points for each consecutive victory, the loser giving way to the next player.
