In the city of Rapture, Booker DeWitt is a well-known private detective who handles the dirty work for his clients when they aren't drinking or playing. On the eve of 1959, a mysterious woman named Elizabeth asks him to investigate the disappearance of a young girl named Sally. Elizabeth's intentions are vague, and she refuses to reveal any vital information, saying only that Sally is alive and that the elite artist Sander Cohen might have information about her fate. The duo goes to Cohen's place on High Street but is denied entry to the club. In need of specially designed masks for exclusive guests, Booker and Elizabeth search nearby shops. While Elizabeth distracts the shopkeepers, Booker manages to retrieve the required mask, and the two are welcomed into Cohen's party.
