Synopsis

Based on the 1984 film *The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension*, you play the incredibly cool Dr. Banzai: a radical neurosurgeon, cutting-edge physicist, nemesis of the evil mastermind Hanoi Xan, and lead guitarist of the new wave sensation, the Hong Kong Riders. (Unfortunately, you’ll just have to take our word for it, since the game doesn’t make much use of these traits).

Just like in the zany movie, your ultimate goal here is to defuse a potentially planet-destroying bomb planted by the Black Lectorids, inhabitants of Planet 10. Unlike in the movie, you don’t accomplish this by defeating the Red Lectroids of the 8th dimension with the help of the Banzai Squad and the Blue Blaze Irregulars—instead, you wander through a strangely deserted city to gather the necessary components (gasoline, sand, bauxite, and “a special catalyst”) to fuel your oscillating-propulsion sports jet-car and transmit cancellation codes to the bomb. The game uses a simple VERB-NOUN text parser and, on some platforms, illustrates the scene with static images.
