Synopsis

Cannon Fodder is a military-themed action game with strategy and shoot'em up elements. The player controls a small squad of up to five soldiers. These soldiers are armed with machine guns that kill enemy infantry with a single shot. The player's troops are equally fragile, and although they possess superior firepower at the start of the game, enemy infantry become more powerful as the game progresses. In addition to infantrymen, antagonists include vehicles such as jeeps, tanks and helicopters as well as turrets armed with missiles. The player must also destroy buildings that spawn enemy soldiers. For these targets, invulnerable to machine gun fire, the player must use explosive secondary weapons: grenades and rockets. Ammo for these weapons is limited and the player must find supply crates to replenish their troops. Wasting these weapons can potentially prevent the player from having enough to complete mission objectives. The player can choose to shoot crates – destroying enemy troops and buildings in the ensuing explosion – with less risk to their soldiers than collecting them, but again with a greater risk of exhausting ammunition.

The player progresses through 23 missions divided into several levels each, making 72 levels in total. There are different settings including jungle, snow and desert, some with unique terrain features and vehicles such as igloos and snowmobiles. The player must also face rivers (crossings on which soldiers are slowed and cannot shoot) and quicksand as well as mines and other traps. In addition to shooting action, the game features strategy elements and uses a point-and-click control scheme more common in strategy than action games. As the player's troops are heavily outnumbered and easy to kill, they must use caution, as well as careful planning and positioning. To this end, he can split the squad into smaller units to occupy separate positions or risk reducing the number of soldiers when moving into dangerous areas.
