Synopsis

On Juliet Starling's (voiced by Tara Strong in English and Eri Kitamura/Yōko Hikasa in Japanese) 18th birthday, she goes to the San Romero High School park to meet her boyfriend, Nick Carlyle (voiced by Michael Rosenbaum in English and Kenichi Suzumura in Japanese) who is going to meet her family for the first time. Unfortunately, a zombie outbreak occurred, causing Juliette to fight off hordes of the undead as she made her way to Nick. When she arrives, she finds Nick fighting a zombie that was trying to eat her, and so Nick is bitten instead. Realizing that he is going to become a zombie, Juliette decides that she must decapitate him to save him. When he comes to, Nick discovers that he is still alive, despite being a severed head, and Juliette therefore reveals to him that she is a zombie hunter and that she has performed a magical ritual on him that prevents his soul from transforming into a zombie and retaining his humanity, thus explaining his continued existence as a severed head. Juliet straps Nick's head to her belt and fights off hordes of zombies on her way to meet her guardian, Morikawa (voiced by Bruce Locke in English and Bin Shimada in Japanese). Once they are united, Morikawa explains the situation and explains that the Universe is divided into three realms: Earth, the Land Beyond Words, and the Rotten World, a hellish realm where demons and zombies reside.[7] Morikawa tells Juliet and Nick that someone has opened a portal between Earth and the Rotten World through a combination of dark magic and explosives, and Morikawa sets out to find the culprit. Juliette reunites with Morikawa after fighting zombies with the intention of knocking her into oblivion, and finds the person responsible for the outbreak, an evil goth named Swan (voiced by Sean Gunn in English and Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese), but she cannot stop him from summoning five demons into the world, which take the form of zombies centered around rock and roll themes. Morikawa tries to stop Swan from releasing the demons, but he is mortally wounded. Swan sends the first zombie lord, Zed (voiced by Jimmy Urine in English and Shintaro Asanuma in Japanese), after her, but she kills him in a fight and sends him back to the rotten world. Morikawa tells him to purify the school and kill the four remaining zombie lords before dying. Juliette tracks down the overlords, while receiving advice from her sisters Cordelia Starling (voiced by Linda Cardellini in English and Mayumi Asano in Japanese), the eldest, and Rosalind Starling (voiced by Kimberly Brooks in English and Mariya Ise in Japanese), the younger sister. Juliet continues to explore the school and fight the zombies, and meets Vikke, the second zombie overlord summoned by Swan, whom she confronts aboard her airborne longship and sends him back to Rotten World. The longship crashes on the O'Bannon farm. Juliette is mentally attacked by nightmares projected by Mariska, the zombie queen of psychedelia, but Juliette eventually shakes off the nightmares and faces Mariska herself, defeating her and sending her back to Rotten World. Juliet's father, Gideon, arrives and takes her back to town, where Juliet, Nick and Gideon infiltrate the Fulci Fun Center after realizing it is full of player zombies. Josey, the zombie lord in charge of the center, summons Juliette to his lair at the top of the building, and in a duel, Juliette defeats him as well. Eventually, with one zombie overlord remaining, Juliet's family teams up to infiltrate an unfinished cathedral in the heart of the city, where the last overlord, Lewis Legend, is hiding. Upon accessing his lair, Swan taunts Juliet by saying that Lewis is more than an adversary to her; But in the end, the situation is reversed. Just like all the other overlords when they die, Lewis utters a Latin chant. Swan appears and applauds Juliette for her work and reveals the cruel fact that she was a pawn in his game, and he allowed all the zombie lords to die so that the real zombie lord could be sent back to this world. Swan also tells Juliet that it was her and everyone else at the school who made him into a monster through torture and intimidation. (However, the flashbacks shown imply that Swan might have had feelings for Juliet and that his relationship with Nick pushed him even further.) Essentially, the zombie outbreak was his act of revenge against the students at the school and society in general for making him an outcast. Juliet tries to reason with him, but Swan, unmoved by any attempt to make her see her mistake, pulls off her head to complete the ritual and is absorbed with the rest of the undead into a black vortex, which solidifies into the zombie of all zombies: Killabilly, whom Juliet is forced to fight. Juliet fights Killabilly and is contacted by Morikawa's ghost, who gives her and Nick advice. Midway through the fight, Gideon drives his explosives-filled motorcycle into Killabilly's maw and is seemingly destroyed. Juliette mourns her father, but Nick and Morikawa encourage her to enter Killabilly's mouth before he regenerates. Juliet does so and lands in the demon's stomach, where, in his heart, she encounters Swan's headless corpse. She learns that she must put Nick's head on Swan's body to blow Killabilly into nothing, and does so in tears after expressing her love for Nick. Nick tells her that he loves her and sacrifices himself for humanity. Killabilly explodes and, in a near-death experience, Nick learns from Morikawa's ghost that it has been decided that Nick's honor will grant him a new life, with a new body, but there will be "confusion" over resurrection. Nick learns that this means he gets Morikawa's body, which is much shorter than the previous one, but neither he nor Juliet really care. Eventually, it is revealed that Gideon survived the explosion and together the Starling family returns home in exchange for Juliette's birthday, which can be a positive or negative experience depending on how the game was played. If the player saves everyone available during the game, Juliette's birthday will go wonderfully and Nick will give Juliette her gift of a box of luxury lollipops. However, if the player lets one or more people die, Juliet's mother will act strangely and turn around to reveal that she has been zombified.
