Death Star Interceptor
Synopsis
Death Star Interceptor (sometimes Deathstar Interceptor, or simply Death Star) is a shoot 'em up personal computer video game developed and published in 1984 by System 3 Software on Commodore 64, then ported to ZX Spectrum the following year, only in the United Kingdom.
The game adapts the Battle of Yavin sequence that takes place at the end of the first film in the Star Wars franchise, A New Hope. It features three different phases of play, a jump into hyperspace, battles approaching the Death Star, and a trench raid to drop a bomb and destroy the space station.
The game was first developed on Commodore 64 by Mark Cale and then ported to ZX Spectrum. Cale goes to the United States to try to obtain a license to distribute the game on the continent but does not obtain it. It includes music from the film composed by John Williams and digitized voices, licensed from Fox. The game is, however, adapted without an official license.
When it was released, the game was generally well received by the specialized press, who noted the quality of the programming, its soundtrack and fast and decent gameplay.
