The player embodies a “defective”, a human body which has formed inside the machine, and follows its journey. He must guide the defective through the different stages of his life, under the constant surveillance of the defective police. The game cannot be lost, but the progress percentage varies depending on the number of actions performed. Deus Ex Machina consists of a series of vignettes with limited gameplay. On screens, the player moves a green dot between strands of DNA, fends off police officers examining the body, and jumps over words like "LIES" or "WAR," the relevance and atmosphere of which is usually conveyed by the soundtrack.
