Driver
Synopsis
NYPD officer and former race driver John Tanner is sent undercover by his boss, Lieutenant McKenzie, to find out the intentions of a crime syndicate led by Castaldi. McKenzie asks Tanner to go to Miami and meet a pimp named Rufus. After arriving in Miami, Tanner uses his driving skills to prove himself to some gangsters in a parking lot, allowing him to become their escape driver.
Tanner works for various gangsters before meeting with Rufus, who instructs Tanner to save Jean-Paul, one of Rufus's associates. Rufus is then shot by his girlfriend Jesse. Needing more information for her investigation, Tanner apprehends Jesse and takes him to the police station, where she reveals that Jean-Paul is now in San Francisco.
Tanner goes to San Francisco, where he meets Castaldi, the boss of Jean-Paul, and begins to work directly for him. He also meets Rusty Slater, his former racing rival, who also works for Castaldi. Tanner later learns that Castaldi is working with a man named Don Hancock, who is running for president. He later suspects that Slater spied on him and destroyed Slater's car during a road chase, resulting in Slater's arrest.
The Castaldi family moves to Los Angeles, where Castaldi plans to assassinate FBI agent Bill Maddox as part of Castaldi's plan to commit a more publicized assassination in New York. Tanner tells Leck, a police associate, to make sure Maddox shows up, otherwise Tanner's cover could be affected. Maddox's assassination succeeded, but the police ambushed the gangsters, forcing Tanner to keep them safe. Tanner convinces the suspected gangsters that Slater probably spoke to police about the planned assassination during his interrogation. Leck later tells Tanner that McKenzie recently met Marcus Vaughn, a corrupt FBI agent who works with Castaldi and Hancock.
The Castaldi family then moved to New York, the site of the highly publicized assassination. His law enforcement associates tell Tanner that McKenzie wants him to pull out of the undercover operation because he fears Tanner's cover won't last long, and Leck tells Tanner that Hancock bribed several FBI operatives. Tanner remains infiltrated and continues to work for Castaldi, intent on finding out what he plans to do.
Tanner finally learns that Castaldi is planning to assassinate the President of the United States and Tanner is tasked with driving the President's car. However, he ignores all instructions and keeps the president safe. McKenzie then arrives and tells Tanner that Castaldi and all his associates, including Hancock and Vaughn, have been arrested. He then tells Tanner to take back his badge, but Tanner refuses, suspecting that the police and FBI are involved in the work, corrupted by bribes due to Vaughn's involvement. Tanner leaves, completely ignoring McKenzie.
