Description

DX11 Digital Programmable Algorithm Synthesizer (c) 1988 Yamaha.

The Yamaha DX11 Digital Programmable Algorithm Synthesizer was a compact FM synthesizer designed as a successor to earlier 4-operator DX models such as the DX21 and DX100. Developed by Yamaha, it featured a refined 4-operator frequency modulation (FM) synthesis engine with improved digital processing, 8-voice polyphony, and enhanced MIDI implementation. The DX11 offered a streamlined interface for sound editing while maintaining compatibility with Yamaha’s extensive FM sound design ecosystem, making it a practical and affordable option for studio and live use in the late 1980s.

- TRIVIA -

The DX11 was part of Yamaha’s second wave of 4-operator FM synthesizers, following earlier entry-level models like the DX100 and DX21.

It retained full compatibility with DX7-style SysEx data, allowing it to load and share patches within the broader Yamaha FM ecosystem (with limitations due to the 4-operator architecture).

Compared to earlier models, it featured improved digital converters and slightly refined sound quality, especially in high-frequency content.

The instrument was popular in MIDI sequencing setups due to its reliability, multitimbral capabilities, and compact rack-friendly design (via external control setups).

It was often used for FM basses, electric pianos, metallic percussion, and synthetic textures typical of late-1980s pop and electronic music.

The DX11 represented Yamaha’s effort to keep FM synthesis accessible after the dominance of the more complex DX7 flagship model.

It competed in the same market space as entry-level analog and hybrid synths from Korg, Roland, and Casio.

Today, it is appreciated as a straightforward and efficient FM module with the classic Yamaha digital sound character.
