Synopsis

Einhänder takes place in a fictional future during a war between the earth colony, Sodom, and the lunar colony, Selene. The "First Moon War" resulted in the destruction of most of the Earth's surface and the creation of a totalitarian regime on the planet. The game recounts the events of the "Second Moon War" in which the Moon once again attacks Earth to reclaim its natural resources. Selene's tactic involves sending an individual combat spaceship called "Einhänder" on kamikaze missions to cause as much damage as possible on the planet before being destroyed. The player plays one of these pilots attacking the earthly capital.

As the player progresses through the game, the Selenean military satellite Hyperion relays command orders and objectives. The “EOS” central on-board computer synthesizes the commands. EOS also records and relays the player's flight and battle data to Hyperion. After completing the last objective, Hyperion informs the player that the combat pattern of the last EOS unmanned fighter has been completed. The player has the honor of being the target of the final EOS test as a reward for their heroic efforts. When the player dies, they will advance two classes and receive the Sirius decoration. After surviving the test's intense barrage of artillery fire, the pilot wonders why they must be eliminated by their allies and questions their military leaders' justification for the war.
