Synopsis
In Eliza, the computer takes on the role of a therapist, asking seemingly empathetic questions based on your previous responses. It analyzes keywords and rephrases them to keep the conversation going. What gives the impression of genuine understanding is in reality just clever manipulation of the text. Yet Eliza managed to convince many users that they were talking to a real person, paving the way for AI and early text adventure games.
