ELT-286B-160B(E) (c) 198? Chaintech
The ELT-286B-160B is a classic "Baby AT" motherboard that exemplifies the standard AT-compatible design of the late 1980s. Unlike the specialized or "high-performance" 286 boards of the era, the ELT-286B was designed for pure, reliable compatibility with the original IBM PC/AT. It provided the basic functionality—keyboard control, ISA expansion, and memory management—that would define the "IBM PC Compatible" standard for the next decade.
- TECHNICAL -
Processor: Intel 80286 (typically 12 MHz, sometimes labeled for 16 MHz).
Chipset: Often utilized a highly integrated chipset from Chips & Technologies (C&T) or similar VLSI logic (such as the early FE3000 or equivalent series) to reduce the chip count from the original IBM design.
Expansion: 8x 16-bit ISA slots (with one 8-bit hybrid compatibility).
Memory: Utilizes 30-pin SIMMs (or sometimes SIPP), usually supporting up to 4MB, which was quite generous for the 286 era.
BIOS: AMI or Award, providing the quintessential "text-mode" BIOS setup interface that would remain largely unchanged until the mid-90s.
- TRIVIA -
The "E" Suffix: The "(E)" in the MAME listing often refers to revisions that added minor "enhancements" for peripheral integration, such as improved support for faster RAM or specific variations in the keyboard controller (8042-series) logic.
The Battery "Time Bomb": Like all boards of this vintage, the ELT-286B is notorious for its barrel-style NiCd battery. If you are handling an original board, the corrosive leakage from this battery is the primary threat to the motherboard's survival. It is the most common reason these boards fail in private collections today.
