Description
Motherboard:
ELT-P9 (c) 198? Chaintech
The ELT-P9 was a "Baby AT" form factor motherboard built to offer a high-performance 286 environment. It was typically equipped with an 80286 processor (usually 12 MHz or 16 MHz) and featured an architecture designed for maximum compatibility with the then-standard IBM PC/AT specifications. It is most notable for being one of the final "optimized" 286 boards before the market shifted entirely to 386SX and 386DX platforms.
- TECHNICAL -
CPU: Intel or AMD 80286 (typically 12/16 MHz).
Chipset: Often utilized a chipset from Chips & Technologies (C&T) or similar VLSI logic sets that were standard for 286-to-AT bridge designs.
Expansion: 8x 16-bit ISA slots (with one 8-bit hybrid slot).
Memory: Utilized 30-pin SIMM or SIPP slots, typically supporting up to 4MB of RAM (a massive amount for a 286 at the time).
BIOS: AMI or Award BIOS, known for the classic "Turbo" mode toggles.
- TRIVIA -
The "Turbo" Mode: Like many boards of the elt series, the P9 featured a physical "Turbo" jumper or header for a front-panel LED/button. When disabled, it would slow the CPU down to 8 MHz (or even 6 MHz) to ensure compatibility with older copy-protected software that relied on specific clock-cycle timings from the original 4.77 MHz IBM PC.
Keyboard Speed Selection: A standout feature of the eltp9 and its siblings was the ability to toggle CPU speed via keyboard shortcuts (usually Ctrl + Alt + + or -), a "power user" feature that predated modern software-based clock management.
