Synopsis

Released late in the Mega Drive's lifespan by an unknown developer, Ranger X initially garnered little attention but is now regarded as a standout demonstration of the console's capabilities.

This side-scrolling shooter features a large mech accompanied by a smaller, car-like sidekick that can merge with the main unit for alternate shooting modes. Players controlling the main mech can fire forward or backward and use a rocket pack to boost and hover. The game blends platforming and shoot-em-up elements across levels that aren't strictly linear.

The game features innovative graphics given the hardware limitations - There is a 3D introduction to most levels (remembering that the console had no 3D capability and a tile-based renderer) and some levels use a line-based scrolling effect to give the impression of 3D backgrounds.
