Synopsis

As this game takes place during the year 2097, according to the intro sequence, a sequence also provides the background story of this game: During the year 2057, the depletion of Earth's resources coincided with the expansion of space exploration. After a catastrophic war over ever-dwindling resources, which ended 10 years before the events of G-Police, Earth's governments were stripped of their military power. As a result, powerful corporations exercised control over Earth and the burgeoning space colonies. The Government Police (G-Police) were formed by the remaining coalition government on Earth to maintain order in these colonies.

In the latter part of the introductory sequence, Slater, the game's protagonist, introduces himself as a veteran who had joined the G-Police to conduct his own investigation into the apparent suicide of his sister Elaine, suspecting that she was murdered. He also gives his views on the G-Police, stating that they lack authority and "turn a blind eye" to "shady corporate deals" while attempting to maintain order. He describes the Havoc gunships as outdated and the pilots as a mix of desperate veterans and naive idealists.

The action takes place in a futuristic urban setting, sometimes illustrated by cutscenes.
The game's early levels show Slater fighting enemy gangs. The company "Krakov", suspected by the G-Police, supplies weapons to gangs. The president of Krakov, however, was subsequently the subject of an assassination attempt by gangs. During this attempt, Hiroshi Tachikawa - a pilot whom Slater describes as flying his gunship "like he was born into it" - dies when his warship crashes after a mysterious malfunction. In the interests of morale, the nature of his death is concealed; Slater notes that this incident is reminiscent of Elaine's death.

After numerous insurrections, invasions and acts of terrorism on his personnel and property, Krakov blames a rival company, "Nanosoft", and begins openly attacking them with his private army. Lacking evidence of his involvement in criminal gangs, the G-Police protect Nanosoft, ultimately destroying Krakov's military power. The G-Police, however, are investigating exactly why Krakov and Nanosoft were fighting. The second half of the game depicts a conflict between the G-Police and Nanosoft's private forces, who attack the G-Police after the collapse of Krakov, both out of panic over the investigation and to tie up loose ends.
