Gale Racer
Synopsis
Gale Racer shares similar gameplay to Rad Mobile, with the player driving east across America against rival cars within a strict time limit. There are, however, a number of graphical and technical changes to better suit Saturn's hardware, and rather than one continuous journey, the "zones" are divided by loading screens. There are also 23 rival cars, compared to 14 for the arcade.
Gale Racer allows the player to drive a completely different vehicle than Rad Mobile and renders all rivals as polygons, rather than resized sprites. Like Rad Mobile, a Sonic the Hedgehog "mascot" hangs from the car's ceiling (resembling his look in Sonic the Hedgehog 3), but others from the Sonic series are available, including early home viewings of Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel.
However, despite being a port of a three-year-old game (for arcade hardware that had been retired), Gale Racer is noticeably scaled back from its arcade counterpart, running at half the frame rate with lower drawing distances and less detailed "textures" for the road and landscape. The division of the zones means that there are no more stage transitions and that the road is always the same color. The mascot's physics are also simplified, always swinging and spinning at the same pace no matter what's happening in the game.
There are also no police officers exploding when the player finishes first.
