Synopsis

Gateways is a 2D platform game set in the laboratory of an inventor named Ed, following an outbreak linked to some of his more "creative" experiments. Can you help him escape the laboratory?

Aside from traditional platforming elements like jumping on enemies' heads, spikes, and moving platforms, there are walkway cannons. These allow you to place two walkways on the walls, floors, and ceilings of the lab, so that when you pass through one, you exit through the other. As one progresses through the game, different types of gateway guns are introduced with different effects. After the basic gun, you get a gun that creates two different sized gateways. Passing through one of them makes Ed shrink in half, while the other makes him grow twice. Then you find a gun that has one of its gateways connecting not only to the other's location, but also to his time, allowing Ed to travel back in time and meet past versions of himself. Finally, the last gun manipulates gravity, so the passage allows Ed to walk along walls and on ceilings.

Gateways takes place on a single, sprawling map, riddled with puzzles and challenges. As one acquires bonuses, a larger and larger part of the map opens up and contains even more bonuses and secrets. In addition to the gateway weapons, Ed will also find a torch that will allow him to illuminate dark areas of the map and a mirror that can be used to deflect lasers.
