TurboExpress 486 VL (c) 1993 Genoa
The TurboExpress 486 VL is a high-performance 80486 Baby AT motherboard engineered by Genoa Systems around 1993 to 1994. Built to premium workstation standards, it features a 168-pin Socket 3 architecture driven by a robust core logic setup (typically utilizing the high-efficiency SiS 85C471 or specialized OPTi/Intel configurations). The board delivers excellent compatibility across the 486 matrix, supporting Intel 486SX/DX/DX2, AMD Am486, and Cyrix processors with front-side bus speeds ranging from 25 MHz up to 50 MHz. Designed for high-throughput multimedia and storage processing, its expansion interface includes three 32-bit VESA Local Bus (VLB) slots seamlessly mapped alongside six 16-bit ISA slots. Memory infrastructure consists of four 72-pin SIMM sockets supporting high-capacity Fast Page Mode (FPM) RAM, backed by an expandable L2 secondary static cache (SRAM) array capable of holding up to 512 KB.
- TRIVIA -
The Genoa Brand Pedigree: Genoa Systems was highly respected in the early-to-mid 1990s for their high-end Windows graphics accelerators (like the Genoa Phantom series). The TurboExpress 486 VL was explicitly engineered to extract maximum performance from Genoa's own VLB graphics cards, optimizing local bus timing signals to prevent the display flickering or sub-system crashes common on generic clone boards.
Heavy-Duty Cache Subsystem: The board features a beautifully laid out banks grid for standard DIP static RAM (SRAM) cache chips. Genoa optimized the memory controller pathways on this motherboard, allowing it to execute true zero-wait-state memory reads directly from the L2 cache when paired with high-speed 15ns or 12ns SRAM modules.
