Motherboard:

GMB-486SG (c) 199? Gemlight

The GMB-486SG is a Socket 3 motherboard that highlights the industry's shift away from VESA Local Bus (VLB) toward the more robust PCI bus. It is built around the SiS (Silicon Integrated Systems) 85C496/497 chipset, which was the "gold standard" for 486-to-PCI bridge performance. This board is widely praised for being significantly more stable and "user-friendly" than the earlier UniChip-based models, as the SiS chipset handled IRQ routing and DMA timing much more gracefully.

- TRIVIA -

The "SG" Significance: In Gemlight’s terminology, the "SG" usually denoted their "Super Green" line. This was a marketing push to differentiate these boards from their earlier designs by highlighting advanced power-saving features (APM), which were becoming essential for the more energy-efficient 486 CPUs like the AMD DX4-100 and 5x86-133.

The Overclocker's Secret: Many retro-enthusiasts prize the gmb486sg because the SiS 85C496 chipset is highly tolerant of bus speeds. It is one of the few boards from this period that allows for reliable operation when overclocking the PCI bus frequency, which is often necessary when pushing an AMD 5x86 chip to its limit (160 MHz+).
