Motherboard:

GMB-486UNP (c) 199? Gemlight

The GMB-486UNP is a flexible 486-class motherboard featuring a Socket 3 interface, designed to support a wide range of Intel, AMD, and Cyrix 486 processors. It is widely recognized for its use of the UniChip (U4800) chipset, a common yet reliable solution that bridged the gap between legacy ISA architecture and the emerging VESA Local Bus (VLB) standard. This board was a popular choice for those wanting to maintain legacy hardware while benefiting from the increased bandwidth of VLB graphics and disk controllers.

- TRIVIA -

The "UniChip" Mystery: The UniChip U4800 is a bit of an enigma in retro-computing. Many manuals for the GMB-486UNP actually listed the chipset as "Unidentified" because UniChip was a brand often associated with rebranded or highly genericized logic sets. MAME preservation of this board was significant because it helped confirm the specific register behaviors of this obscure chipset.

The Jumper-Heavy Design: Like many Gemlight boards, the GMB-486UNP is notorious for its complex jumper settings. It requires meticulous configuration for CPU voltage, speed, and cache settings. Collectors often refer to the manual (available via resources like ArxValdex or TH99) as a mandatory tool for any owner.
