Gorf
Synopsis
"Gorf" is a shoot'em up in five scenes, in the tradition of Phoenix, for example, but with the particularity of being able to move in four directions. Among others, two paintings are covers of classic games of the time: Space Invaders (see image) and Galaxian. The fifth scene confronts the player with the "Flagship" (as we said then), the boss of the time, and we then return to the first, in a significantly accelerated version. The arcade game presented ranks at the edge of the screen that we lit each time the flagship was destroyed: space cadet - capitan - etc. up to Space Warrior, sixth and final grade.
Its garish colors and saturated explosions made it quite a game apart in the 80s.
Two things to know:
1. In two-player mode, the second player does not replace the first when his ship is destroyed but when a painting has been finished.
2. Gorf's shot is also quite particular: the fired projectile eliminates the previous one - in other words, the more often you shoot, the less far the bullets go. You must therefore measure your shot to reach the top of the screen. This specificity explains the relative lack of success of the game at the time of its arcade version in the strict sense.
Missing from the roms offered are the game's catchphrases and comments from Gorf himself upon the player's death (which were, at the time, perfectly incomprehensible).
Don't hesitate to move the switches a little and get yourself six ships. With three, you hardly get far.
A clone is offered under the name "Gorf (Program 1)": significantly more difficult than the other in the first table, it is a little slower in the rest.
A whole era... GORF NOT DEAD!
