Synopsis

The story of Guwange takes place during the Muromachi period in Japan. Around this time, an increasing number of people are being possessed by shikigami. Although shikigami grant great spiritual powers, the strain inflicted on the host causes them to die exactly one year after being possessed. However, a legend has arisen regarding Guwange, the malevolent god trapped in Mount Gokumon (i.e. the gate to hell). If a person possessed by a shikigami can gather talismans of the five Chinese elements - wood, fire, earth, metal, water - from five demons serving Guwange, then infiltrate Gokumon and kill Guwange, the shikigami will be destroyed and the possessed person will not suffer an untimely death.
