Hampstead is a quest, but not for gold. The goal is to reach the pinnacle of social status, and wealth is only part of the equation. If you want to climb the social ladder, you must also earn the admiration and respect of your peers, and there’s more to it than just a large bank balance. In Hampstead, it helps to know a thing or two about art—or rather, to give the impression that you do. You have to wear the right clothes, be seen in the right places, live in the right house with the right partner, and use the right mode of transportation. You have to meet the right people and say the right things to them. While an old-school tie never hurts, your most important tool is simply the ruthless and skillful use of your natural cunning. At the start of the game, you’re a nobody whose goal is to become somebody. So lie, cheat, steal, and swindle. You know it makes sense.
