Synopsis

Well, just to fill you in, know that High Grenadier is a wargame in the style of... North&South. We thus have a general map, with different locations shared by two opposing camps, and combat phases to make everything a little more hectic. But where North&South was an extremely well thought out, attractive and above all super fun title (thanks to the 2-player mode), High Grenadier is just a tasteless boredom simulator. First of all, we must recognize that the graphic aspect of the thing turns out to be quite repulsive. The profusion of green hues leave no doubt about the 100% militaristic aspect of the game and, even if you don't buy a wargame to play in the sweetly funny universe of Doraemon, you enjoy taking advantage of the color palette of your console... especially when it's something other than a GameBoy. As a result, it's hard to get hooked on a game in which everything seems bland and lazy.
Furthermore, the game system is neither rich nor innovative, and even less exciting since it roughly consists of choosing your troops, recruiting generals and invading opposing camps. To do this, we start by selecting the units which will participate in the combat, and then passively watch the events unfold (in the manner of Langrisser). Unfortunately, at a time when players can try their hand at Dragon Force, it seems difficult for this High Grenadier, void of any strategic dimension, to find a place in the sun. The almost non-existent management phases, the abundant kanji and the poor general coating contribute to making this Telenet title without much interest. In a more or less similar genre, the excellent Nectaris or its equally excellent sequel Neo Nectaris should do their job...
