ADAM features a 61-key velocity-sensitive keyboard with aftertouch, and includes an integrated accompaniment system intended for live performance use. Its sound engine is based on sample-based synthesis (ROM-based waveforms), offering 16-note polyphony and multitimbral operation. The instrument also includes an arpeggiator-style accompaniment and a built-in MIDI file playback system.

Instead of traditional sliders or knobs, ADAM uses a set of wheel-based controllers with integrated feedback mechanisms and a central display for parameter editing.

The instrument was aimed at solo performers and home entertainers, competing with arranger keyboards from manufacturers such as Yamaha and Roland during the mid-1990s.

ADAM stands for Advanced Digital/Analog Musical Instrument.

The instrument was developed as a joint effort between Hohner and Waldorf Electronics, with additional software and sequencing technology contributed by EMC, a company known for MIDI playback systems. It was designed as a high-end 'one-man-band' keyboard, combining automatic accompaniment, preset-based sequencing, and General MIDI-compatible sound generation.

The user interface is notable for its unusual control system designed by industrial designer Axel Hartmann, also known for his work with Waldorf synthesizers.

Despite its ambitious design and advanced interface, the ADAM remained a relatively rare and niche instrument.
