Synopsis

Hong Kong is a variation of Shanghai in which players must remove tiles based on a pattern. The player can select the starting pattern or enter a three-letter code that offers several thousand possible combinations.


Instead of removing tiles in pairs, as is the norm in Shanghai, the player can select any tile on the board as long as it matches the tile requested by the game. However, the points scored are based on the number of tiles surrounding the selected tile: A maximum of 320 points is awarded for tiles completely surrounded on all six sides. Any tiles that are not on at least one other tile will fall off the board causing a premature end to the game: players must find the balance between scoring as many points as possible and ensuring that no tiles will fall off the table following a move.
