Horror Story
Synopsis
Originating in the arcade (where it was known as Demon's World to Western audiences), Horror Story is an old-school side-scrolling platformer/shooter. The basic premise of the gameplay is very simple: shoot and jump your way through large amounts of monsters, defeat the boss, move on to the next level. There is no narrative of any kind in the game, and no cut scenes; the hero is a duke resembling a duke Noukem with a muscular appearance and equipped with firearms.
The screen scrolls at all times, even if the player character is not moving. Levels are almost entirely linear, with the only choice sometimes being whether to stay on the ground or jump to higher platforms. Two-player cooperative mode is available.
Although shooting is the main element of the game here, jumping (especially double jumping) should be used freely to guide the hero through the platforming stages and avoid and kill enemies (since head jumping eliminates them as well). Weapons can be changed by grabbing power-ups, which appear as floating, changing letters. Depending on which letter the player decides to take, the hero will have different weapons. These weapons include: a constant energy beam of moderate power; flamethrowers; bombs; a short-range grenade launcher of all kinds; and a gun that spits fireballs in three different directions.
As the name suggests, the game has a horror theme. The game begins in what looks like ancient Japan, with traditional Japanese demons, but later shifts to more "mainstream" horror, with haunted towns, ghosts, zombies, skeletons, etc.
