HOT-409
Description
Motherboard:
HOT-409 (c) 199? Shuttle Computer International
The HOT-409 is a compact, reliable 486 motherboard that serves as a bridge between the older, jumper-heavy architecture and the later, more refined Shuttle designs. It is built around the SiS 85C461 chipset. While it lacks the high-speed VESA Local Bus (VLB) slots found in the later 419, it was engineered for high compatibility with standard 16-bit ISA peripheral cards, making it a favorite for business workstations and specialized lab environments that didn't require high-speed graphical throughput.
- TRIVIA -
The "Reliability" Benchmark: Because the HOT-409 used an ISA-only bus, it was remarkably stable. In the early 90s, when VLB cards were expensive and often incompatible with each other, many corporate IT departments preferred the "boring" but "working" HOT-409 over more exotic designs.
The "Compact" Philosophy: Shuttle often marketed the 409 as a "Mini-AT" solution. Its layout was remarkably efficient, reducing the number of jumpers required for CPU configuration compared to earlier, non-Shuttle clone boards of the same period.
