HOT-419
Description
Motherboard:
HOT-419 (c) 199? Shuttle Computer International
The HOT-419 is a classic VESA Local Bus (VLB) motherboard built around the SiS 85C471 chipset. It was one of the most reliable boards in Shuttle's early "HOT" (High-speed Onboard Technology) lineup. It is a workhorse board designed for users who wanted to combine the power of a 486DX2 or DX4 CPU with the raw throughput of a VLB graphics card (like an S3-based or Tseng ET4000/W32 card) and a VLB disk controller.
- TRIVIA -
The "VLB Jitter" Solution: Unlike many lower-end VLB boards that suffered from "wait-state" issues when running two VLB cards (e.g., a graphics card and a hard drive controller), the HOT-419 was specifically designed to handle the timing complexities of multiple VLB devices. It earned a reputation as the "most stable VLB board" in the mid-90s enthusiast press.
Shuttle’s VLB Peak: The HOT-419 was released just as VLB was reaching its limit. Because VLB was physically tied to the CPU clock, overclocking a 486DX2-66 to 80MHz often meant the VLB bus became unstable; however, the HOT-419’s SiS chipset handled these overclocked bus speeds better than almost any of its competitors.
