HOT-433
Description
Motherboard:
HOT-433 (c) 199? Shuttle Computer International
The HOT-433 is a "Baby AT" motherboard that features a robust UMC UM8881/8886 chipset. Unlike its predecessors which relied heavily on VESA Local Bus (VLB), the HOT-433 leaned heavily into the PCI standard, offering four PCI slots alongside four 16-bit ISA slots. It was a favorite for enthusiasts and system builders because it could accommodate almost every iteration of the 486 processor—from the low-power 486SX to the "king" of the Socket 3 world, the AMD Am5x86-P75 (overclocked to 160MHz+).
- TRIVIA -
The "Gourmet" Board: Often referred to by retro-enthusiasts as a "gourmet board with quirks," the HOT-433 is known for its sensitivity to component choices (RAM, cache, and BIOS versions). It is not a "plug and play" experience but rewards the builder with unparalleled 486 performance.
BIOS Evolution: Enthusiasts often seek the 2001-era AWARD BIOS (2A4X5H21.BIN), which provides features that were unheard of in 486-era stock BIOSes, such as CD-ROM boot support.
