Synopsis

Hyakki Yagyou takes its name from the nighttime parade of the 100 demons in Japanese folklore, when several youkai and other Japanese demons come out of hiding for a single night to scare people. The game is otherwise a fairly traditional 8-bit RPG, although it features unusual aspects such as being able to see enemies while walking around (as opposed to the random encounters usual at the time) and a regularly proportioned adult protagonist. There is also no map of the world beyond: cities and monster-infested nature are directly linked.
