IBM 6580 Displaywriter (c) 1980 IBM Corp. [International Business Machines]

The IBM 6580 Displaywriter System is a dedicated word processing computer introduced in 1980 by IBM.

It is designed as a self-contained office word processing workstation, combining a keyboard, monochrome display terminal, and external diskette storage in a single professional system. The Displaywriter runs a specialized operating environment focused entirely on document creation, editing, formatting, and printing, rather than general-purpose computing.

The system uses floppy disk storage and supports modular software and language components, allowing organizations to tailor the word processing environment to their needs. It is typically connected to printers for high-volume document production in office and corporate settings.

The IBM Displaywriter represents a transitional step between dedicated electronic typewriters and fully programmable personal computers, widely used in administrative, legal, and business document processing environments during the early 1980s.
