Synopsis

Initially called Project RS2, Ikaruga is sometimes seen as the spiritual successor to Radiant Silvergun, a famous shoot 'em up, developed by Treasure in 1998 on Saturn. Ikaruga stands out strongly by centering its gameplay around the concept of duotone, inspired by their previous title Silhouette Mirage. Ikaruga's innovation is the differentiation of all game mechanics into two colors: white and black (although for visibility reasons, these two colors are surrounded by a blue and red halo). Only a projectile of the opposite color to the Ikaruga can destroy it. If it is the same color, it is absorbed and increases the ship's energy stock which can be released at any time in a burst of destructive rays, the more numerous the stored energy is. If enemies cannot change color, the player can instantly alternate from one to the other and thus benefit from the effects of polarity. An enemy hit by a shot of the opposite color will be destroyed twice as quickly, but if it is destroyed by a shot of the same color, it will release a bunch of bullets towards the Ikaruga which it can absorb.
