Description

Musical Instrument (Electronic) published 41 years ago:

JX-8P - Polyphonic Synthesizer (c) 1985 Roland.

The Roland JX-8P Polyphonic Synthesizer was a digitally controlled analog synthesizer designed for professional studio use, combining warm analog sound generation with improved stability and programmability. Developed by Roland Corporation, it featured 6-voice polyphony, two digitally controlled oscillators (DCOs) per voice, a resonant analog low-pass filter, and built-in chorus effects. Unlike earlier JX models, the JX-8P introduced a more modern interface with membrane buttons and a data slider, and it supported MIDI, making it highly suitable for studio integration and external control.

- TRIVIA -

The JX-8P was part of Roland’s mid-1980s transition toward more digitally integrated analog synthesizers.

It featured a menu-driven interface rather than dedicated sliders, which made it less immediate but more compact and studio-oriented.

Sound editing was significantly enhanced with the optional PG-800 programmer, which restored hands-on control via sliders.

It used digitally controlled oscillators (DCOs), ensuring stable tuning while retaining analog warmth.

The instrument was widely used in late-1980s pop, film scoring, and ambient music for its lush pads and evolving textures. It was used by Biosphere, 808 State, Tangerine Dream, The Shamen, Depeche Mode, Überzone, the Cure, Go West, Ozric Tentacles, Future Sound of London, Jean-Michel Jarre, Europe, and Jimmy Jam.

It included patch memory, allowing users to store and recall complex sound designs instantly.

The JX-8P is often associated with expansive pad sounds and smooth analog-style string textures typical of the era.

Today it is considered a classic analog-poly synth of the MIDI era and a key part of Roland’s JX family evolution.
