Musical Instrument (Electronic) published 37 years ago:

K4 16-bit Digital Synthesizer (c) 1989 Kawai.

The Kawai K4 16-bit Digital Synthesizer was a PCM-based synthesizer designed to expand upon the limitations of earlier budget digital instruments. Developed by Kawai, it featured 16-bit linear PCM waveforms, 16-voice polyphony, and a more advanced subtractive synthesis architecture that included resonant digital filters. The K4 offered improved sound shaping capabilities compared to its predecessor, the K1, making it a more versatile instrument for studio and performance use.

- TRIVIA -

The K4 introduced resonant digital filtering, a major improvement over the K1, allowing more expressive synthesis and sound shaping.

It used 16-bit PCM samples, which provided significantly cleaner and more detailed sound compared to earlier low-cost digital synths.

The instrument supported layering and velocity sensitivity, enabling more dynamic and expressive performances.

It was widely used in late-1980s and early-1990s pop, film, and electronic music production.

The K4 expanded Kawai’s presence in the competitive PCM synthesizer market dominated by Yamaha, Roland, and Korg.

It included a large preset library covering orchestral, synth, bass, and atmospheric textures.

Compared to the K1, it was more powerful but still relatively straightforward to program.

Today it is appreciated for its warm, slightly grainy 16-bit digital character and early resonant filter implementation.
