Kaijuu Monogatari
Synopsis
Kaijuu Monogatari ("Shell Creature Story") is an 8-bit RPG for the NES that more than superficially resembles Enix's Dragon Quest. Like many contemporary RPGs for the system, it borrows the basic premise (talking to the king, finding out what to do next, fighting an evil force) and turn-based tactical combat and gradual development from its major influence, but also a lot. of its aesthetic: The box art has some illustrations inspired by Akira Toriyama and the protagonist wears familiar blue armor. The subtitle of Kaijuu Monogatari - Shell Saurs Story - is a localization of its Japanese name.
The plot, in more detail, concerns a race of peaceful shell creatures who have four elemental warriors who united to fight the villain Fat Badger, but were separated in the final struggle. The player must unite the four by exploring the world and discovering the locations of the other three warriors, then regrouping for another attack.
A unique twist, but one that would also become a feature of Dragon Quest IV (thus a complete round of innovation), is that the player is able to take on one of these four heroes at any time by selecting a menu option, although each starts at level 1 and is very weak. For the party to be strong enough to meet, everyone must be raised independently to a high enough level.
The game would eventually spawn its own franchise with sequels and spin-offs released for the Super Famicom and Game Boy in Japan.
