KMA-202F-12R (Winbond chipset)
Description
Motherboard:
KMA-202F-12R (c) 199? Arche Technologies, Inc.
The KMA-202F-12R is an 80286-based motherboard designed for the high-end office market in the late 1980s. Unlike the generic "Baby AT" clones of the time, this board features a proprietary PCB design that prioritized long-term reliability and signal stability. It is built around a customized Chips & Technologies (C&T) chipset, configured to operate the 80286 processor at 12 MHz (with a selectable 6/12 MHz toggle, common for software compatibility). The board utilizes eight 16-bit ISA expansion slots and supports up to 4 MB of RAM using a combination of 30-pin SIMMs and onboard DIP-style memory banks. It was designed to be housed in Arche's signature heavy-duty chassis, which featured superior cooling compared to standard generic AT cases.
- TRIVIA -
The "Arche Quality" Standard: Much like the kma300g we discussed, the KMA-202F is lauded for its physical construction. The PCB traces are wider and more heavily shielded than those on the budget-tier PC-Chips 286 boards, which significantly reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI) and allowed the system to remain stable under high-load office conditions for extended periods.
Proprietary BIOS: The kma202f uses a specialized BIOS that includes advanced diagnostic utilities not typically found on standard clone motherboards. These utilities were designed to allow Arche-authorized technicians to quickly isolate faulty RAM banks or failing ISA peripherals, making this board one of the most maintainable 286 platforms of its era.
