Synopsis

Its subtitle translates to True Scary Stories, Hyaku Monogatari is a video game that pays homage to the board game Hyaku Monogatari Kaidankai, very popular in Japan. This game involved getting together at night, lighting a hundred candles and telling horror stories, blowing out the candles one by one until the room was completely dark.
These horror stories are told in a linear manner through text, photos and sound effects. Most are very short and non-interactive. The few exceptions usually involve location or response choices like in a visual novel, which can sometimes affect the conclusion of the story. A recurring episode involves visiting various locations throughout Tokyo and looking into criminal cases and ghost stories.
