KT-76 (c) 1996 Ensoniq

The Ensoniq KT-76 was a performance-oriented keyboard derived from Ensoniq’s EPS sampling technology, designed to offer affordable workstation-style capabilities for live musicians and home studios. Developed by Ensoniq, it combined 16-bit sample-based sound generation with a simplified interface, velocity-sensitive keyboard, and basic sequencing and layering functions. The KT-76 was intended as a cost-effective alternative to full-featured samplers, focusing on usability and immediate performance control.

- TRIVIA -

The KT-76 was closely related to Ensoniq’s EPS sampler architecture, sharing much of its underlying sample playback engine.

It was designed as a “performance keyboard” rather than a deep editing workstation, emphasizing live playability over complex programming.

The instrument featured 76 keys, which made it more suitable for piano-style performance than smaller synth keyboards of the time.

It used 16-bit sampling technology, consistent with Ensoniq’s shift toward higher-fidelity digital sound in the early 1990s.

The KT series was part of Ensoniq’s strategy to bring sampling-derived sounds into more affordable keyboard formats.

It supported layering and basic sound manipulation, allowing musicians to combine multiple sampled instruments.

Compared to full EPS systems, it offered fewer editing features but much faster workflow for stage use.

Today it is considered a niche but interesting member of Ensoniq’s early 1990s keyboard lineup, bridging samplers and performance synths.
