The QTC-SXM KT X20T02/HI Rev.3 is a highly integrated, entry-level 80386SX Baby AT motherboard manufactured around 1991 to 1992, showcasing system firmware provided by Quadtel. Designed for budget-conscious home and office workstations, the board centers around a surface-mounted (PQFP) Intel 80386SX microprocessor operating at a stable 20 MHz over a 16-bit external data bus pipeline. The core logic subsystem is built on a highly integrated single-chip or two-chip XT/AT hybrid controller solution (typically utilizing Headland or Chips & Technologies logic). The physical layout emphasizes a tight footprint, hosting two 8-bit ISA slots and four or five 16-bit ISA slots. Memory handling configurations are routed through four or eight traditional 30-pin SIMM sockets supporting up to 8 MB of Fast Page Mode (FPM) DRAM, completely bypassing external L2 static cache requirements to minimize production overhead.
- TRIVIA -
The Quadtel Firmware Specialty: While most retro-computing collectors associate early x86 motherboards exclusively with AMI, Award, or Phoenix BIOS setups, Quadtel was a brilliant, highly specialized software engineering firm that developed incredibly fast, clean-room compatible BIOS code. Their BIOS ROMs were famous for having a hyper-optimized Power-On Self-Test (POST) routing routine that booted systems noticeably faster than competing firmware. Quadtel was eventually acquired by Phoenix Technologies in 1992.
The 386SX Form Factor Efficiency: By leveraging the surface-mounted 386SX package and integrated core logic, this motherboard drastically reduced manufacturing complexity. It allowed clone builders to sell 32-bit internal processing systems at near-XT prices, making it a pivotal hardware transition board that helped phase out old 80286 office computers.
