Synopsis

On a sunny day, Little Critter and his grandmother went to the beach. A bus came to pick them up and they left.

When they arrived, Little Critter tried to set up the umbrella, but was lifted into the air by the strong winds and his visor fell off. The rescuer whistled and waved her back down, and Little Critter and the umbrella landed on the ground.

He decided to fly his kite instead, but it accidentally landed on the mother cow's head.

After his kite flying was a disaster, Little Critter bought hot dogs for him and Grandma for lunch, as well as some soda, but he unexpectedly tripped over a ball and dropped the hot dogs in the sand. So he washed them with water (but sea water), before he and grandmother ate them.

After lunch, Little Critter found a cute seashell for Grandma on the sand, but there was a crab inside.

After escaping from the crab, Little Critter tried to blow up his seahorse buoy, but didn't have enough air. With each attempt, his swim shorts fell down, exposing his hairy butt in the front and his face turned red. When he raised them, the air escaped from his hippocampus. He then landed on the ground with a loud noise. As he didn't have enough air, grandmother helped him a little.

Little Critter told his grandmother to take him into deep water, but not too far.

Little Critter put on his fins and mask and showed Grandma how he could snorkel.

Later, Little Critter digs a hole for Grandma, and he covers her and tickles her toes.

That evening, Little Critter built a sandcastle for Grandma, but a big wave came and washed the castle away. Little Critter was disappointed that his sandcastle was ruined and there was nothing he could do about it. He considered rebuilding it, but it would have been too late to do another one that day. He was therefore forced to give it up. Grandma felt bad for her grandson and noticed Little Critter's sympathy for sandcastles. However, she managed to comfort him and said, "That's what happens to sandcastles." (That is, as Little Critter says on page 10 - "Grandma said, 'That's what happens to sandcastles.'") She then suggested that they build a new one next time. This put a smile on Little Critter's face and he agrees to make a new one next time (maybe summer next year or during their next visit to the beach).

Later that night, Grandma and Little Critter returned to the bus. On the way home, Little Critter was very tired, so he fell asleep and told Grandma he would watch their stop.

The bus dropped them off at home and they realized they had a great time together at the beach. Grandma held Little Critter in her arms and they went to bed. (That is, what Little Critter reads - on the last page - "We had a great time at the beach. Just Grandma and me.")
