Synopsis

When it was released in 1987, Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen had a huge impact on Japanese video games and, like Dragon Quest the previous year, it gave birth to numerous more or less accepted clones. Released on PC Engine on April 1, 1989 – you can't make this up! – Makai Hakkenden Shada is, to be polite, Data East’s “answer” to Falcom’s hit. But to be a little less so, like the site Hardcore Gaming 101 which addresses it in its weekly section dedicated to turnips, this RPG is more like plagiarism with entire portions of the map shamelessly copied! It is nevertheless based on the novel Nanso Satomi Hakkenden composed of 106 volumes (!) published in the nineteenth century, and which features eight samurai in the Sengoku period, half-brothers all descended from a dog... But outside of this context, the only originality of the title lies in the fact that you will die instantly if you try to leave an area without having completed all the required tasks!
