Synopsis

Metamor Jupiter is one of the myriads of shoots available on the PC Engine CD media. It all starts with a fairly long and well-crafted intro sequence. From there, we get on the plane to try to catch the bad guy in this horizontal shoot of a fairly classic style but with a rather unusual atmosphere.
Not that he stands out from the others in the way that Cho Aniki does, for example. Its graphic style is reminiscent of Japanese anime from the 80s, for a rather uneven result. Generally, the graphics are pretty average, often dull and repetitive. On the other hand, the visual effects are much more present than in most games of the genre. The developers have tried to give relief effects in the backgrounds and decorations, via differential scrolling which is quite well seen. This sometimes drags the game a little, but rarely too much. Where it is more annoying is that sometimes these effects harm overall readability.
Your ship is quite ugly, but it has the particularity of being able to modulate at will by pressing the Select key. You can therefore change your shot at will to cast a wider net or, on the contrary, concentrate your firepower. The second button on the controller is used to turn your ship around and fire in the opposite direction. Your main weapon evolves according to the power ups, but the latter also give you life. In this sense, the shield system is quite special, which adds an extra surprising touch to the game.
Unfortunately, the whole thing very quickly turns out to be cumbersome, the fault of a blatant lack of intensity in the action, the whole thing being quite slow although not particularly easy. The game, due to its relative rarity, may be of interest to collectors.
Faced with enormous competition on PC Engine, Metamor Jupiter is struggling to stand out. Neither good nor bad, it's still worth a try.
