Mister Purple Pants
Synopsis
In the world of classic console homebrew programming, developers write small scripts to test the limits of a console's hardware—specifically its custom graphics chip (for the 7800, that's the MARIA chip).
The MARIA chip is famous for its ability to handle a massive number of moving sprites on screen at once without slowing down, but programming it directly can be tricky. Mister Purple Pants was used as a testbed for sprite rendering, basic animation loops or collision detection, featuring a character or element playfully dubbed Mister Purple Pants.
Because it's a non-commercial tech demo, you won't find it on a physical cartridge in stores, but the .a78 ROM file is preserved in online homebrew archives for enthusiasts running emulators or modern multi-carts like the Dragonfly or Concerto.
