The Ensoniq MR-Rack was a rackmount version of the MR workstation series, designed as a compact MIDI sound module for studio and live use. Developed by Ensoniq, it featured a large internal ROM sound library, 64-voice polyphony, multitimbral operation, and a high-quality digital effects engine. Unlike keyboard-based workstations, the MR-Rack removed the sequencer and performance controls, focusing instead on being a dedicated sound expander for MIDI setups.

The MR-Rack shares the same synthesis engine as the MR-61 and MR-76 workstations, but without keyboard and sequencer.

It provides 64-voice polyphony and 16-part multitimbrality, allowing full arrangements to be driven externally via MIDI.

It includes Ensoniq’s high-quality 24-bit effects processing engine, inherited from the MR workstation design.

Sound generation is based on a large ROM sample library, optimized for realistic acoustic instruments, pads, and performance sounds.

The unit supports expansion cards (Ensoniq EXP series), increasing its sound palette significantly.

It was widely used as a rack sound module in MIDI studios, especially paired with sequencers like the Alesis MMT-8 or Roland MC series.

Unlike earlier Ensoniq samplers (Mirage, EPS, ASR), it does not focus on sampling, but on ROM playback and workstation-style preset sound design.

The MR-Rack reflects Ensoniq’s mid-1990s shift toward simplified, production-ready workstations and modules rather than deep sound programming systems.

It is often compared to competing rack modules such as the Roland JV-1080 and Korg M1R in terms of its role in studios.

The MR series was one of Ensoniq's final major product lines before its acquisition by Creative Technology.
