NATO Commander
Synopsis
NATO Commander is a war game by MicroProse Software from 1983. As commander-in-chief of NATO forces, the player must try to repel an attack invented as part of the computer-played Warsaw Pact. The superiority of the enemy in numbers requires the coordination of the available units of the standing army and the air force here, as well as the use of the advantageous terrain and the well-targeted use of chemical and nuclear weapons. The game takes place in real time, where five minutes of gameplay corresponds to one second in real time and can be interrupted at any time. At the end of each day, a situation report is posted which summarizes the results of the battles. The situation on the battlefield is assessed by victory points and triggers a series of events during the game that can be positive or negative for the ongoing war and ultimately lead to the breakup of one of the conflicting parties. The game has five scenarios with increasing complexity and four difficulty levels plus the "Battle for Germany" scenario demonstration mode.
