Hit the ice with EA Sports’ “NHL 06” for Xbox. This latest installment in the NHL series builds on the 2005 version, adding new rules and an updated roster that includes virtually all the big names in the National Hockey League. “NHL 06” includes everything from “NHL 05,” including the revamped shooting controls. What’s new in the 2006 version is the use of the left analog stick for dekes—which, in hockey terms, means dodging and fooling defenders. The right analog stick is used to perform spectacular moves, such as a spin move or a between-the-legs pass. These spectacular moves will distract goalies, giving the player an opening to shoot. The downside of these moves is that only “superstar” characters can perform them consistently. The game offers many traditional hockey game modes, including “Dynasty” mode .” In this mode, players manage their own hockey team and must handle external pressures, sponsors, and many other aspects while striving to uphold the team’s philosophy, which differs from one team to another. Other modes include Single Season, Leagues and Tournaments, Quick Match, and Online Play. The graphics in NHL 06 are top-notch. This time around, they’ve been refined to accurately reflect the size differences between players. Defensemen and goalies, who are traditionally larger players, do indeed appear taller, while forwards—who are smaller and faster—are indeed a bit slimmer and shorter. This is just a small change that adds to the overall exceptional gameplay experience of NHL 06.
