Pac-Man 320
Synopsis
Pac-Man 320 is a fascinating piece of homebrew development history. It refers to a technical push to recreate a pixel-perfect arcade experience on the console using one of its most notoriously difficult graphical settings: 320 Mode.
The 320 Mode doubles the horizontal resolution to 320 pixels. This matches high-res arcade texturing, allowing sprites to be ripped directly from the arcade board.
The catch? 320 Mode severely limits the palette. You usually only get a maximum of 4 colors per sprite/layer unless you use highly complex programming tricks, which is why commercial developers back in the 80s rarely touched it.
In the early 2010s, legendary Atari 7800 homebrew developer Bob DeCrescenzo (PacManPlus) undertook the challenge of converting his older Pac-Man Collection assets into true 320 mode.
